Christmas DIY

The children at PPKKTCM are no stranger to Christmas time. In fact, they are children of all seasons. They are the mascots of every events of the orphanage. Thinking out of the box, we want the children to enjoy Christmas from a different perspective i.e. creating their own Christmas through teamwork.

The volunteers/mentors came up with the “CHRISTMAS DIY” theme. The children were taught to create their own Christmas tree, including the ornaments such as snowman, greeting & wish cards and of course the star. The enthusiasm and excitement of the children were inspiring, but most importantly, the mentors saw the artistic side of these children. In addition, they demonstrated true teamwork in creating their very own Christmas tree, and we had to admit they did a great job at that.

We were expecting some chaos in the painting of the Christmas Tree, as there was only one tree to be painted by everyone. However, our anxiety were uncalled for, as the children surprised us by their spirit of cooperation – teamwork objective achieved! They took turns to paint, and Sai Man (a down syndrome child) demonstrated very good painting skills.

Upon completing the painting of the Christmas tree, the children moved on to make their very own ornaments for the Christmas tree, starting with the snowman. Apart from the down syndrome children, who were limited by the flexibility of their fine motor skills, the rest of the children created their furry and delicate textured snowman quite well.

Next the children created their own greeting cards and drew their favourite items to be decorated on the tree. The children were expressive in creating their own greeting cards, and very creative in drawing their favourite items for their tree. We saw in them the “ownership” that they demonstrated in wanting the best for their tree.

Finally, it was time to decorate the tree. This part was really the icing on the cake. Not only the items created by the children gave their own tress that unique Christmas look, but the spirit of harmony and peace demonstrated by the children, fills the airs and gave that Christmas atmosphere . From the pictures, one can see how harmonious these children worked together to bring glory to their Christmas tree. As mentors, we cannot ask for more and glad we introduced Christmas DIY!
